Q: Do I need a GP referral to see a psychologist?

No, you do not require a referral to see a psychologist. You can make an appointment without a referral from your GP, however a GP referral is required in order to receive a Medicare rebate.

Q: I have a physical health issue/chronic illness, how can psychology help me?

Most people living with chronic health issues and injuries report changes in their mood and to other areas of their wellbeing. Changes can include feelings of low mood, anxiety, anger, grief and impacts to sleep, appetite, relationships, physical activity, study, work and hobbies. Seeking psychological support can be helpful in learning how to manage the emotional impacts, changes to motivation and addressing barriers to managing your health condition. Accessing psychological support can also help you learn new ways to both improve your physical and emotional wellbeing.

Q: How long will I attend therapy for?

This will depend on a range of factors including your current concerns, therapy frequency and treatment goals. An initial conversation with you will occur in your first session by your treating clinician regarding a recommended number of sessions. It is normal for the number of sessions recommended to change, as circumstances change.

Q: What is your cancellation policy?

When you make an appointment, the whole appointment time is reserved for you. If you are unable to attend your appointment, please provide as much notice as possible. Due to the amount of time set aside for your appointment, 48 hours minimum is required to avoid cancellation fees. Appointments cancelled less than 48 hours incur 50% of the session fee, and appointments cancelled with less than 24 hours’ notice incur 100% of the session fee. Q: What do I need for telehealth sessions?

Access to a private and safe space, reliable internet connection and a device (e.g., laptop, tablet, etc) with camera and microphone functions.

Q: How long do sessions go for?

Sessions run for approximately 50 minutes.

Q: How can I pay for my sessions?

Payment for sessions can be made via bank transfer (preferred). Alternatively, sessions can also be paid via Visa and MasterCard debit and credit cards. Please note all card payments will incur additional surcharges and processing fees.

Q: How much does it cost to see a psychologist at ME Health Clinic?

At ME Health Clinic, the standard cost of a 50 minute consultation is: $225, Monday - Friday between 9am-5pm $235, Monday - Friday (After hours), before 9am & after 5pm $245, Saturday appointments. If you have a Mental Health Care Plan you may be eligible for a Medicare rebate between $96.65 to $141.85. If you have private health insurance, you may be able to claim a rebate through your private health insurer. As each private health insurer is different, please check with your individual health fund to see what mental health services (if any) are included based on your current policy and level of coverage. Q: I have never been to therapy before, what can I expect?

In the first session, your psychologist will complete an initial assessment with you, in order to better understand what bought you to therapy, your current coping patterns and supports (if relevant), treatment goals and aims, and general mental health history. Subsequent sessions will typically involve using a specific therapy approach, best suited to your current needs and presenting concerns. This may involve learning different skills targeting your thoughts, feelings and behaviours to improve your quality of life.
